Philadelphia Freedom and The Merchant Prince

Historic Philadelphia. The Cradle of Liberty...So many stories I've read and heard about this place. And today I got to experience one of those stories up close. The legendary Wanamaker building.

Speaking this morning in the Crystal Tea Room (the top floor of the building), an amazing sprawling antique auditorium of a room with giant pillars, complete with chandeliers and a number of smaller rooms around its perimeter. Macy's is a just couple floors below. How fitting, since this building is the namesake and tribute to one of the most amazing individual's Philly, or America, has known. Especially when it comes to business. John Wanamaker, a brilliant entrepreneur nicknamed the Merchant Prince. He was a powerful and innovative businessman who contributed greatly to various cities and communities...then and now.

He developed the department store concept and the "one-price" system, first inaugurated by him in 1865 was one of many marketing and selling strategies that attracted customers in droves and set his business apart as the hub of center city Philadelphia. By 1899 his stores had higher sales numbers than any other retailer in the world and his worth topped $25 million (that's a BIG number in 1899)!

Thanks to Ron, Liz, Joleen, and the BCA team for all your hospitality. And for the cool history lesson on one of my favorite Captains of Enterprise. If you want to learn more about Wanamaker, get a tremendous little book called

The Strangest Secret

After speaking this morning to a couple hundred Captains of Enterprise at the stunning Scottsdale Performing Arts Center and a lunch meeting with a group of leaders, most day's highlight reels would be complete. But the lead story on my own personal SportsCenter tonight is my dinner with Diana...My friend Diana Nightingale--the First Lady of personal development, whose late husband Earl (yep, THAT ONE) created a motivational masterpiece over 50 years ago.

Diana is the epitome' of elegance and grace and to hear her recount many of her stories of her life with (and without) Earl is priceless. Thanks Lady Diana.

p.s. If you've never heard Earl Nightingale's recording of The Strangest Secret, get a couple copies today...1 for you, and 1 for a young person you care about. Here's the link...

Back in the Air

Charlotte to Detroit to Phoenix...
While flying is an exact science, capitalizing on the "shortest distance between two points" is not always applied to this science of flight. As I reflect on the blowing cold & snow of Michigan (10 degrees) I went through on my way to my speaking session in sunny Scottsdale, I can't help but think how our pursuit of success, in most any endeavor, is much the same.

While we all would certainly prefer the "direct flight" or that straight line of shortest time and distance in reaching our goals or aspirations, it is a destination that can still be arrived at no matter where we find ourselves on the way. Here's hoping your connecting flight will lead you to the sunny skies of success in whatever area you choose.
