Mastering Marketing in Michiana

Dateline: South Bend, Indiana. Just a couple of touchdown drives from my hotel is the famed Notre Dame campus. Touchdown Jesus, the Golden Dome, The Fighting Irish, The 4 Horsemen, so many STORIES! Notre Dame has done an amazing job of MARKETING over the years. And that's why I'm here...Marketing & Stories.
I'm speaking to the Michiana Advertising Federation this afternoon on MARKETING NOW! If you haven't given much thought to marketing lately, chances are good that your business isn't doing very well. Even though this NOW economy is booming (check the facts, it's true) many individuals and organizations are bust. Lagging sales come from boring sales "shows" and many of the prospective buyers have moved on.

Better questions are where the treasure lies. Questions like "If your business closed tomorrow, would anyone notice...or care?" and
"If there were NO TV, NO RADIO, and no other conventional communication, how would you get your message out?"
It's time to think differently about the things you already know a lot about.
Whether you realize it or not, We're ALL in the marketing business. Because if you're not very good at marketing, chances are you'll get fewer chances to prove how good you are at what you do in today's NOW economy.
What do DISNEY and THE U.S. MARINES have in common? They're both in the business of RE-DESIGING YOU and they both understand that when opportunity arrives it is too late for preparation.

A Feat Fit For FEET...

At 4:30am this morning I headed off into the darkness to meet a daunting foe...100 holes of golf! Running through my mind over and over is the question "WHAT?" closely followed by "How and why did I ever agree to this?" And then I'm reminded it's for a great cause, Samaritan's Feet (www.SamaritansFeet.org).

Crisp fall weather and blasts of color created a great backdrop for the day and at approximately 5:18pm I, along with a small group of brave souls, had completed 102 holes. We raised money, raised awareness, raised expectations, and raised a few blisters along the way.
A great day for Samaritan's Feet. My feet on the other hand, may never be the same...Advil and Ben Gay to the rescue.

Banjo Anyone?

Life is good. Music adds to it. I LOVE music! And I love getting to participate once in awhile as a "musician." (some of us prefer to be called ARTISTS :-) That's me on the left with that funny looking "guitar..."

Over the past few weeks at my church we've had a special "western" theme that required (sort of) a BANJO player. Not the most common of instruments certainly. Turns out for almost 30 years I've been a picker...er, player of this cool stringed instrument. And getting the chance to play for these few weeks with other players and singers, all very talented, has been a blast for me. Cultivate a love for music, even learning to play it, in you, your children, and others around you. The rewards are long-lasting. Wardrobe (like mine) is optional.

Play on!
