Memphis in May
The breezeway outside my hotel feels nice as I wait for my ride to the event I'm speaking at here in Memphis. It's such a beautiful day I decide to go out a little early and sit on a bench in the shade. In 20 minutes I must have had 7 or 8 hotel staff do something remarkable. They were walking by my bench but took time to look at me, make eye contact, introduce themselves, welcome me to the Marriott, ask if I needed a ride, and even ask if they could get me a bottled water. I'd been at the hotel only a few hours and knew that this was an amazing team of people who must have an amazing leader. So I asked Ray, one of the remarkable bellmen, "who's the GM here?" "Mr. Lawrence," he replied. "Doug Lawrence."
So I asked to speak with Doug and relayed my story about being here only a few hours but getting the "special treatment" that I observed others getting even as Doug and I were speaking. I assured him that I traveled a lot, stayed in many big, boring, hotels and couldn't help but let him know how impressed I was with his team's remarkable "show" from Ramona at the front desk to a couple of unnamed maintenence men planting flowers while laughing and talking with me and other guests.
Kudos to Doug & his team at The Memphis Marriott...I noticed.
